Manchester United’s return to the UEFA Champions League began brilliantly on Tuesday evening with a 3-0 win at home to FC Basel.
Goals from Marouane Fellaini, Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford secured all three points, meaning the Reds top Group A after matchday one.
Andy, from Doncaster
A season-ticket holder for more than 20 years, Andy was delighted to see Jose Mourinho’s men get the European campaign off to a winning start. “It was a good result,” he said. “I don’t think we played to our potential, but they did enough. As a fan, it’s brilliant to see United back in the Champions League, back where we belong.”
Andy believes Lukaku has been an outstanding addition to the squad, following the Belgian’s sixth goal in as many matches for the club. He added: “You can’t knock Lukaku, to be honest, he’s been brilliant so far.”
Jackie, from Manchester
Agreeing with Andy’s sentiment on United’s new striker, Jackie said: “I think Lukaku was a brilliant buy. I was doubtful when we first got him, but he has been very good value for money.”
Fellaini made a significant impression from the bench after replacing the injured Paul Pogba. “I don’t know what has happened with Pogba but I hope it’s not too serious,” Jackie continued. “I think Fellaini was Man of the Match – I’m a very happy United fan going home!”
Paul, from Stockport
Another season-ticket holder, Paul brought his two sons to the match, and told ManUtd.com afterwards:
“You’ve got to be happy with 3-0. United did more than enough to win. We did what we needed to do, we got three points and it was a great start to the Champions League.”
United’s European campaign will continue later this month, with a trip to Russia to face CSKA Moscow on Wednesday 27 September.
